Welcome to Year 6

Year 6 is taught by Mrs Wood and is supported by Mrs Holden and Miss Lane. We are so excited to welcome your children to our class for their final year at Thorn Primary School! This year, your child will continue to enjoy their learning whilst also preparing for the year of KS2 SATS assessments and the new challenges of high school. Some children may find the idea of these challenges a little bit daunting, but we will be there to guide them every step of the way.

Here is some key information which may help with the transition and provide further information about our weekly routines.

Physical Education:

Wednesday

The children will need their full kit for all of their PE lessons. Any child who has pierced ears will either need to remove these or they will need to bring plasters into school.

Reading:

Children are expected to bring their book and reading record to school everyday.  Reading diaries will be monitored weekly. It is highly encouraged that children are reading and/or sharing a book each day at home. It is important that reading records are kept up to date with a signature and page number updated at least 3 times per week. Y6 children can sign their reading records themselves if they wish. Doing this will help staff to ensure books are changed regularly. We would greatly appreciate if you could please encourage and support their love of reading.

Spellings:

As a class we practice our spellings on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Following these sessions, your child will come home witht heir spelling journal so that they can complete their follow up practice task. It is very important that the spelling journals are returned to school the next day, ready to use for the next spelling lesson. Follow up practice tasks are kept short to ensure that this is manageable. Please encourage your child to complete their spelling task as every little practice helps!

Homework:

Homework will be given out on Friday and will be due to be handed in the following Wednesday. Children can attend homework club on Tuesdays if this will help with them to complete their tasks.

Our Learning

Autumn Term - Festivals of Colour

This term we are learning about the teachings of Buddhism and how the advice set out in the 'Eight Fold Path' could be applied to the every day life of a Buddhist. We will use this learning to inspire our artwork, where we will use a range of painting skills to design and create our own mandala patterns. We will also develop our geographical knowledge when studying Nepal!

Spring Term - Ancient Worlds

This term we will travel back in time to learn what life was like in the Ancient Islamic Civilizations and we will explore what legacies from this time period have been carried forwards still to this day! We will link this to our creative DT skills in order to design and create teddy bear waistcoats using geometric patterns and appliques!

Summer Term - Inspirational People

This term we will learn about two inspirational people, Rosalind Franklin and Charles Darwin! We will be considering their work and how they have impacted the world in which we live in today. We will become budding scientist ourselves through out science topic of 'Evolution and Inheritance'. This time of year is also exciting as we will be planning and practising our Y6 leavers play, ready to perform in our final days at Thorn!
