Mathematics

At Thorn, we deliver a high-quality maths curriculum based on the National Curriculum, supported by the Lancashire Red Rose Maths Planning. Our teaching follows the CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract), helping children build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through hands-on resources, visual representations, and formal methods. The Red Rose framework ensures clear progression, mastery, and full curriculum coverage from EYFS to Year 6. We focus on fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving, with regular assessment to track progress. Families are encouraged to support learning at home through resources and workshops.

Y3 & Y4 Multiplication Tables Check

Our year 3 and 4 pupils work hard to learn their multiplication facts so that they can work efficiently, recalling facts quickly to support their calculations. They work hard using times tables booklets to learn sound patterns, they recognise and learn relationships on counting sticks and practise quick recall of facts on the 'Purple Mash MTC Simulator' in preparation of the statutory Y4 Multiplication Tables Check.
