At Thorn Primary we celebrate lots of exciting events throughout the year.
We welcome visitors all year round to host workshops in a range of subjects.
At the start of the academic year we held a number of history workshops focussing on Ancient Greece, Baghdad and Ancient Egypt. Year 1 visited Clitheroe Castle!
In January 2026 we welcomed visitors from various religious backgrounds to learn more about their religion. Year 2 and Lighthouse Class made Diya lamps whilst learning all about Hinduism, Year 6 learned all about Buddhism, Year 3 and 4 Learned about the Prophet Muhammad on his trip to Hajj in a workshop about Islam, and EYFS and Year 1 joined an Indian Dance workshop!
Throughout the year, our PTA organise lots of exciting events including Termly family Fairs, Discos and lots of other events too. We are looking forward to the Valentines Disco in February!
We celebrate World Book Day each year with a different theme or task for pupils to complete - previously including making their own costumes, creating a "book in a box" or by bringing a book to our "book swap" event to encourage reading.
We hold an annual Careers Convention for Year 4 and Year 6 pupils to deliver awareness amongst our children of the job opportunities that are available within the local community and beyond. The children will be given the opportunity to speak to people who do a variety of jobs to gain an insight into how to achieve their ultimate goal.

World Book Day 2026
On Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th March 2026 we held workshops to focus on oracy, drama an performance.
On Monday children in EYFS, KS1, Lighthouse and Year 3J were invited to dress as a fairy tale character as they explored the story of pinnocchio through dance as then they held a performance at the end of the day in front of their peers.
The teacher had nothing but positive feedback about the children. She said their behavior and effort was absolutely fantastic and they were a pleasure to teach.
The children have also given plenty of positive Feedback. Luca in Year 1 was so excited to perform that he nearly burst!
We are very proud of all of them.
On Tuesday pupils in KS2 from 3/4L-6W were invited to dress as a classic book character and their workshop gave them an introduction to Shakespeare and his world via an animated storytelling of his famous play "A Midsummer Night's Dream". The children then developed their own responses to the story through character and movement work.
The KS2 pupils had such a fantastic time and we had fantastic feedback once again for the pupils behaviour and efforts.
Year 6 also created a "Dont judge a Book by its cover" display, encouraging pupils to read a book solely on a brief description.
The display was a fantastic addition to our World Book Day Celebrations!
All pupils had the opportunity to choose and take home a World Book Day 2026 book at the end of their sessions.
As part of their fundraising efforts, we made the decision to ask for a voluntary contribution of £2 per pupil which will be donated to Bacup Family Centre.
Once we have a final balance we will update parents via text message to confirm how much we were able to raise for this vital service.
A huge thanks to everybody for your continued support!

Author Visit
EYFS & Year 1 were thrilled to be visited by children's author Antony Flynn-Few. Our very own EYFS pupil Harry was particularly excited as he got to introduce his Dad to the class. He shared his story 'Mr Jelby and The Lion' - a book full of courage, kindness and adventure. The children loved asking Antony questions and were excited to learn he has written 9 books altogether!
