EYFS Curriculum

Throughout EYFS we follow the statutory framework for the Early Years foundation stage.

This framework is grouped into seven areas of learning:

Prime Areas:

  • Communication and Language (Listening, attention, speaking, understanding)

  • Physical Development (Gross and fine motor)

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (Self-regulation, manage behaviour and build relationships with others)

Specific Areas:

  • Literacy (Early reading and writing skills)

  • Mathematics (Early number, numerical pattern)

  • Understanding the World (Early Geography, History, Science and RE)

  • Expressive Arts and Design (Early Music, Dance, DT, Art, Computing)

Our ambitious curriculum is delivered through themes linked to high-quality texts which develop children's language, knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live.
The themes are shaped to the children's interests, whilst also being tailored to the wider school allowing us to celebrate our learning together.

Language is the foundation of children's thinking and learning. Our curriculum places a strong emphasis on communication skills and the basic skills of reading, writing and maths whilst developing the whole child.
Woven throughout our curriculum are the 'Characteristics of Effective Learning' ensuring children become confident learners who are able to work with others. Children develop respect and resilience alongside creative and critical thinking.

We focus on building the foundations for future learning through a mixture of adult-led activities and child-initiated play. Our learning environment is designed to provide opportunities for children to embed their learning thus transferring into their long term memory. Children learn best when they are deeply engaged and motivated. Through our carefully planned environment and meaningful interactions, we support children to become confident, resilient, and capable learners.

We continually assess children's prior knowledge and skills alongside new learning and use this information to plan next steps. Our curriculum is enhanced through well chosen high-quality interventions including 'Time to listen/talk, Early Talk Boost, Phonological Awareness, 5 minute Literacy / Maths box'

At the end of EYFS children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals. The EYFS and Year 1 team work closely together to ensure children are prepared for the National Curriculum and have a smooth transition.
